Forever Reading
It is located in a place that has proudly earned the moniker, “Music City”. It is in the proximity of Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University. It sits at the corner of Jefferson Street and 28th Avenue North. One can dine at the nearby eateries of Seafood Sensations, T J’s BarBQ and Fish, Kingdom Cafe and Grill, or Swett’s Restaurant. This place to visit in the soul of Nashville, Tennessee is Alkebu-Lan Images Bookstore and Gift Shop.
In Alkebu-Lan Images, you will find a gazillion, (intended hyperbole), ALL things African and African American. In addition to books, one can purchase clothing, jewelry, body products, fragrances, oils, incense, and other home items. This past weekend, I went to Alkebu-Lan with the intention to buy a specific book, but I left with another one. Has this ever happened to you? As soon as I saw the title, “Fisk University: The College History Series”, there was no doubt that I was going to buy this book. As an alumna of #FiskUniversity, this text had to become a member of my book collection.
My Charge to YouIf you have not had the opportunity to visit this bookstore, which is tucked away in the heart and soul of Music City, then please do so. But don’t leave without purchasing at least an item or two. Moreover, the staff is extremely polite and helpful. If they do not have what you need or want, then they can order it for you. Thanks to Ms. Calandra Ransom for your assistance yesterday; I will be back!!!
I hate to end this blog post, but I need to get back to reading, “In Search of the Promised Land: A Slave Family in the Old South” by John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger, and how fitting that Nashville, Tennessee is included in this novel.

Forever Reading
1875. Historian. Pioneer. Lack of history represented in history books. One week. Journal of Negro History. Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Second week of February. 1976. Transitioned into Black History Month.
These words relate to one man who made African American history extremely important, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. It is February 7, 2019, and Black History Month celebrations are under way. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) sponsors the National African American Read-In, and the International Literacy Association (ILA) endorses this event. “The goal is to document readers making the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities” (“Take Part in the African American Read-In”).
How I am Celebrating Black History Month In honor of Black History Month, I am reading the following novels:
I do not know if I will finish reading these books by February 28, 2019, but I do know that I will read them. Lastly, I thank Dr. Woodson for creating National Negro Week, which is now being recognized for a month, because he sought to educate the minds of people about African Americans’ contributions in America. His legacy continues

Always Forever Reading

Yesterday, I was excited because a student asked me about a book. Now, this may not seem like a big deal, but it is a BIG deal to educators, especially to those who love reading. This student HATES to read and has no interest in picking up a book whatsoever. However, we have something in common, watching the Carl Weber series, The Family Business. The season finale came on television last Tuesday, but it did not make sense to him because he missed the previous episodes. I told him that even after he watches them, he still may have questions because the television show is leaving out details that are in the novels. He said, “Now I have to go to the library to check out the book. You got me interested in this book.” I told him stop by my classroom anytime to talk about what he has read. This is a small but major accomplishment because remember, this student hates to read. My challenge to you: Inspire someone to read.

Forever Reading

Over the years, I have accumulated books, books, books, and more books. Sadly, I have yet to read many of them. For someone who loves to read, I have been tremendously slacking, and I needed to determine why. My personal love for reading has been put on the back burner because I am always reading for class. This year, I have decided to make time to read my collection of books. I also wanted to join a book club, preferably one online. I found the Litsy app on my phone, read the reviews, and quickly became a member. The Litsy Welcome Wagon embraced me with open arms, and now my reading journey begins. My motivation stems from finally making time to read and my fellow Littens on Litsy. My goal is to read 50 books this year. Thus far, I have read 13 books, totaling 4,181 pages in January.
